with a performance by artist Nyugen E. Smith and conversation with guest curator Sara Raza

About the Event

Date

Oct 6, 6 – 8pm

Location

Medford

The Sun Rises in the West and Sets in the East brings together eleven artists who address themes of social and political disorder and instability from local and global perspectives through the poetic language of the art of our time. Employing the media of film, installation, photography and performance, the artists in the exhibition ask non-didactic, open-ended questions that seek to encourage debate and dialogue on inequities and disasters instigated by the lingering remnants of colonialism. Guest curated by Sara Raza with featured artists: Lida Abdul, Kader Attia, Yael Bartana, Asli Çavuşoğlu, Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Ali Cherri, Anton Ginzburg, Emily Jacir, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Nyugen E. Smith, and Nari Ward.

Four Moments of the Sun (2022) is a new performance by Nyugen E. Smith, which draws upon African and African diasporic spiritual traditions related to light and the metaphysical world as a way to reimagine hegemonic structures throughout history. In this performance, the artist employs the use of mirrors, which serve as objects for introspection, as well as portals into other states of being, opening up a space where truth is revealed and reflected.
