How do contemporary artists work both across and against borders to produce social and political change? This panel, in conjunction with Art for the Future: Artists Call and Central American Solidarities, turns to artists, based in both the U.S. and Guatemala, to consider aesthetic strategies that work to dismantle imperialist histories and build decolonial alliances across time and space. Featuring art historian Kency Cornejo and artists Benvenuto Chavajay, Sandra Monterroso, and Beatriz Cortez, with Adriana Zavala, Associate Professor, History of Art and Architecture and Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora, Tufts University. This program will be presented mostly in Spanish with English interpretation.

¿Cómo trabajan los artistas contemporáneos a través y contra las fronteras para producir un cambio social y político? Este panel, junto con Arte para el Futuro: Artists Call y solidaridades centroamericanas, recurre a artistas, con base en Estados Unidos y Guatemala, para analizar las estrategias estéticas que trabajan para desmantelar las historias imperialistas y construir alianzas decoloniales a través del tiempo y el espacio. Con la participación de la historiadora del arte Kency Cornejo y los artistas Benvenuto Chavajay, Sandra Monterroso y Beatriz Cortez, y Adriana Zavala, profesora asociada de Historia del Arte y la Arquitectura y de Estudios sobre la Raza, el Colonialismo y la Diáspora, en Tufts University.

Organized in partnership with Indigenous Performance, a course in Tufts Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, taught by Lily Mengesha, Assistant Professor, Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies and Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora, Tufts University.
