Notes for Noticing

Self-Guided Walk

About the Event

Date

Mar 22–26, 2021

Location

Medford

As part of their ongoing installation Singing We Must Rage, General Sisters has created a new print offering for the Tufts community. Notes for Noticing, according to the artists, is an invitation for “moving and observing in a place where you have been before, to connect with knowledge that is part of your histories, your feelings, and those that are with you.” Though our movements through and beyond campus remain limited, Notes for Noticing presents us with an opportunity to consider our present routines, our histories, and ourselves anew. The artists remind us of the myriad possibilities for new observations in places we have been before.

General Sisters’ attention to plants and the natural world, characteristic of their visual work and social practice based in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, is especially heartening in Notes for Noticing as winter gives way to spring. Included in the print is a recipe for Emergence Tea, meant to nourish the drinker as the planet Earth emerges from its own period of rest. It is General Sisters’ wish that the recipe and reflections in Notes for Noticing help to usher the recipient into a more hopeful season.

In the spirit of General Sisters’ call to co-create knowledge in familiar places, the Tufts University Art Galleries are pleased to present a companion self-guided walk. Prompts inspired and informed by Notes for Noticing pair with a handful of stops around Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus, starting just outside the Remis Sculpture Court.
