Véxoa: We Know – now on view |
To our Tufts students: Welcome back to campus and happy first day of classes! To our entire community: the galleries are now open to all for the fall season. Now on view in Medford: Véxoa: We Know is a groundbreaking survey exhibition of Indigenous artists of Brazil today, developed by curator Naine Terena (member of the Terena Indigenous people of the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso do Sul). Understanding the role of art as a tool for activism, the exhibition presents the work of 22 artists and collectives from regions throughout Brazil, featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, and video. Véxoa, which means “we know” in the Terena language, reaffirms Indigenous agency and struggles for self-determination as well as Indigenous contributions to the richness and diversity of Brazilian visual culture. First presented at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo in 2020, Véxoa: We Know has its only North American venue at TUAG and was made possible by the Teiger Foundation. Please join us for an artist reception for Véxoa, on Wednesday, September 20th, from 6-8pm at the Aidekman Arts Center. The reception will open with an artists’ program featuring exhibiting artists Denilson Baniwa and Daiara Tukano with Claudia Mattos Avolese (SMFA at Tufts). The program will be presented in English and Portuguese. For more information about the exhibition, click the link below; scroll down to rsvp to the reception. |

Join us in Boston for Double Arrows |
At our SMFA at Tufts, Boston campus, Elizabeth James-Perry: Double Arrows opens today! James-Perry, an enrolled member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag, is a lifelong traditional artist, scientist, and illustrator who engages with Northeastern Woodlands Native cultural expressions in myriad forms, from wampum shell-carving and twined basketry to restorative Native garden design and installation. This exhibition features not only her textured weavings and subtly detailed jewelry—which highlight the natural beauty of the local ecosystem—but also work from others within her kinship network who share a commitment to their materials, ancestral knowledges, and practices. These include SMFA faculty member Tanya Crane, artist Erin Genia (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate), as well as family members Jonathan James-Perry and Patricia James-Perry. We hope to see you at a toast, tour, and workshop on Wednesday, September 13th, from 5-6pm to celebrate Double Arrows. Guest curator Abigail Satinsky will be in conversation with exhibiting artists Tanya Crane and Erin Genia; after the reception, Erin Genia will lead a clay workshop. This event is open to all: please register below. |
