Mark your calendars for October 12th for the Leo and Betty Beckwith Lecture featuring renowned photographer Catherine Opie. Established in 1978, this annual series is designed to bring artists and cultural thinkers at the leading edge of contemporary art to the SMFA at Tufts community. The 2023 Beckwith Lecture is made possible through our partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and will be held in the museum’s Harry and Mildred Remis Auditorium. See below for ticketing details. This event is free and open to all, but advance tickets are required. Opie (b. 1961, Sandusky, OH) is an artist working with photography, film, collage, and ceramics. She was a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow recipient and the Robert Mapplethorpe Resident in Photography at the American Academy in Rome for 2021. Opie’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and abroad and is held in over 50 major collections throughout the world. Her first monograph, Catherine Opie, was published by Phaidon in 2021. Opie received a B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute, and an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts in 1988, and now lives and works in Los Angeles. Tickets are live on the MFA’s website on August 22 at 10am; for more information about the MFA’s ticket policies, please click here. |

This fall’s event calendar provides many opportunities to get involved across our Medford and Boston campuses: we invite you to explore upcoming events and register below. Our first event celebrating the new season, on September 13th, is a toast and tour with Double Arrows exhibiting artists Tanya Crane and Erin Genia with guest curator Abigail Satinsky, Program Officer and Curator of Arts & Culture at the Wagner Foundation. Stay on to join a seed pot making workshop with Erin Genia, which is free and open to all. Spaces are limited, so advance registration is required for the workshop (see below), and we will confirm participation a few days before the event. To celebrate the opening of Véxoa: We Know, join us for an artist reception on September 20th with exhibiting artists Denilson Baniwa and Daiara Tukano, as well as guest co-curator Claudia Mattos Avolese (SMFA at Tufts). This program will be in both English and Portuguese. Later in the semester, TUAG will host an artist talk with Elizabeth James-Perry in Boston, as well as a capoeira workshop in Medford. Registration, found below, is required for the workshop. |
