Summer Refresh |
The Galleries may be closed for the summer, but they’re by no means quiet! Our installers have been hard at work building walls, cleaning public art, and preparing for the installation of our upcoming exhibitions Beverly Semmes: Boulders / Flag / Flip / Kick, on view starting the end of this month—July 29 (Reception and Artist Talk: September 18) at TUAG / Medford, and How do you throw a brick through the window…, on view September 2 at TUAG / Boston. Shown in one image above, Crewmembers Gaby Schaab and Maria Wueker (MA’26) had their work cut out for them when tasked demolishing this nearly 20-year-old wall in TUAG / Medford’s Remis Sculpture Court. After removing two decades of layered drywall, spackle, and bold paint choices, the surface is cleared and the space is ready for the installation of interdisciplinary sculptor and installation artist Michelle Lopez‘s Halyard, on view beginning late August. For now, we’d like to thank our crew (and their crowbars!) for all that they do! You can explore the exciting season ahead and register for community-wide receptions below. |

Jackson Lot Mural: Libby Paloma |
In Libby Paloma‘s edition of TUAG / Medford’s annual Jackson Lot Mural Project, Whether up river, up stream, or up a tree…don’t take the bait. Find the other rainbow fish and swim. , the artist conjures and counters a familiar figurative expression of speech: “bigger fish to fry.” The vibrant textiles highlight Paloma’s conception of “world softening,” an effort to instill tenderness in an otherwise harsh ableist world (discrimination against disabled people), the medical industry, and hyper-productivity within a capitalist society. |

As part of the city wide celebration of SMFA alumnus Allan Rohan Crite (1910–2007) (BFA’36), including presentations at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Boston Athenaeum, Tufts University Art Galleries (TUAG) is pleased to present our recent acquisition of his iconic print series Madonna of the Subway. Combining the sacred and the ordinary, the series reflects Crite’s lifelong dedication to capturing the Black experience in Boston. |

Michelle Lopez: Halyard |
In her Remis Sculpture Court presentation, Michelle Lopez’s Halyard is a sculptural sound installation that evokes a flag with everything but the flag itself—the pole, rope, cleat (halyard), and the sounds of fabric flapping in the wind and rope striking metal. In doing so, Lopez breaks down our associations with the idea of a flag—be it a national, institutional, or even a nautical one—to address issues of nationalism and power. |

SMFA at Tufts Billboard: Gabriel Sosa |
As part of the Boston Public Art Triennial, SMFA-alumnus Gabriel Sosa (MFA’16) created Ñ Press, a community print studio in East Boston—in collaboration with Maverick Landing Community Services. I want more celebrations was created with Maverick Landing youth in April 2025, focusing on needs and desires in their community, inspired by Zoe Leonard's I want a president, 1992—enlarged and reprinted as the inaugural 230 Fenway Billboard project in 2018. The billboard and accompanying Ñ Press project was recently highlighted in Frieze’s review of the inaugural Triennial—you can read the full piece here. |
