| Beneath a Heavy Sky |
Beneath a Heavy Sky explores the intersecting languages of abstraction and landscape painting through the work of contemporary artists Lisa Alvarado, Judith Belzer, N. Dash, Keltie Ferris, Hong Hong, Patrick Dean Hubbell, Eva Lundsager, Rodney McMillian, Jeff Perrott, Kianja Strobert, Mary Weatherford, Suara Welitoff, and Emmi Whitehorse with additional selections from the Tufts University Permanent Collection, including the work of modernist forebears Helen Frankenthaler and Sam Gilliam. Critically, the exhibition presents paintings that push against categorization. Playing creatively with the structure, mark-making, and materiality of painting, the artists of Beneath a Heavy Sky make works that broaden our understanding of painting itself as well as the landscape genre. Beneath a Heavy Sky is organized by TUAG Guest Curator Caitlin Julia Rubin, with conceptual grounding from former TUAG Director and Chief Curator Dina Deitsch and School of the Museum of Fine Arts Lecturer Eva Lundsager. |

| SMFA at 150: Proof of Context in the 21st Century |
At TUAG / Boston, SMFA at 150: Proof of Context in the 21st Century continues a year of recognizing the School of the Museum of Fine Art (SMFA) at Tufts University’s 150th anniversary, building upon the Fall 2026 exhibition SMFA at 150: Looking Back. Upending the colloquialism “proof of concept,” Proof of Context centers recent alumni artists of the BFA and MFA programs Creighton Baxter (BFA ’13), Miguel Caba (BFA ‘25), Furen Dai (MFA ’16), Cathy Lu (BFA, ‘07), Sara Magenheimer (BFA/ BA, ‘04) with Michael Bell-Smith, Courtney McClellan (MFA, ‘13), Antonia Kuo (BFA, ’09), Dawit L. Petros (MFA, ‘07), and Daniela Rivera (MFA, ‘06). Together, these works reject the necessity of an evidentiary endpoint, instead speculating, critiquing, and relishing in process as practice. Proof of Context is organized by TUAG Interim Co-Director and Chief Curator Laurel V. McLaughlin with research assistance from TUAG interns Avery Davis (BFA ’26), Jordan Hobson (MFA ‘27), Rylan Nguyen (BFA ’26), and Curatorial Fellow Ayla Tanurhan (MA ’27) and features a new public billboard commission, You Missed & Again Again Again by exhibiting artist Creighton Baxter, on the exterior wall of the 230 Fenway campus. |
