Leo and Betty Beckwith Lecture: American Artist |
|
This Thursday, October 10, please join us for the 2024 Leo and Betty Beckwith Lecture: American Artist, co-presented with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Date: Thursday, October 10 American Artist makes thought experiments that mine the history of technology, race, and knowledge production, beginning with their legal name change in 2013. Their artwork primarily takes the form of sculpture, software, and video—interactive installations that explore the pervasiveness of AI-driven surveillance, website interventions that speak to contemporary conditions of protest, and fictional films that contend with predictive policing that reproduces racial biases. |

TUAG in the News |

The official start of the season brought more banner coverage of TUAG’s Fall 2024 exhibitions. In this Sunday’s print edition of the Boston Globe and online here, critic Murray Whyte spoke to TUAG / Medford exhibiting artist Tomashi Jackson’s ability to deftly probe painful histories with visual splendor: “Jackson’s vivid works, rich with image and color, are deeply poetic, with a powerful rhyming scheme that links past conflict to a fractious present. At their heart, they are lessons — in history, in culture, in art, and how they all interweave — so seductive and holistic that the medicine they carry is indistinguishable from the spoonful of sugar of their visual delight. They are one and the same.” For Boston Art Review, Jane Freiman explored the boundary-defying Ulises: Assembly with A Bookstore, Collective, and Exhibition: At Tufts University Art Galleries, Ulises: Assembly Illustrates How Artists’ Books Refuse to be Defined, calling the exhibition a “intentionally incomprehensive yet delightfully whimsical cross-section of independent book publishing today.” |
