Tomashi Jackson: Across the Universe |
On July 30, 2024, the Tufts University Art Galleries will open Tomashi Jackson: Across the Universe, the first mid-career retrospective of the Cambridge-based artist and educator. Influenced by California muralist traditions, Jackson creates vibrant prints, paintings, videos, textiles, and sculptures that powerfully scrutinize systemic inequities found throughout U.S. history. Now extended through December 8, 2024 Across the Universe explores the evolution of Jackson’s work from 2014 – 2023, in which she fuses deep archival research with artistic strategies of color and layering to illuminate cycles of oppression, activism, and resistance. First organized by MCA Denver, Across the Universe will feature a new, temporary mural by Jackson here at TUAG. A full-color catalogue featuring essays by exhibition curator Miranda Lash, Robin D.G. Kelley, Liz Munsell, Megan O’Grady, and Zoé Whitley, and an interview conducted by Larry Ossei-Mensah with Tomashi Jackson and Nikita Gale is now available through Rizzoli Electa (with a PDF preview available to press by request). |

Ulises: Assembly |
On view starting August 13, 2024, SMFA at Tufts / Boston presents Ulises: Assembly, a residency and exhibition engaging the labor of bookworkers from the Philadelphia-based collective Ulises. Founded in 2016, the bookshop and project space explores the relationships between publics and publications through projects, exhibitions, and residencies asking: “what do you do?” as a means of delving into the printed matters of art publishing today. Ulises: Assembly is organized by TUAG Curator Laurel V. McLaughlin in partnership with Ulises and includes a new 230 Fenway billboard project curated by Ulises with artist Ken Lum. |
