Don’t forget to RSVP for the pre-reception walk-through of Véxoa: We Know, with TUAG director Dina Deitsch and TUAG guest co-curator Claudia Mattos Avolese (Senior Lecturer in Visual and Material Studies, SMFA at Tufts), followed by a program with exhibiting artists Denilson Baniwa and Daiara Tukano. First presented at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo in 2020, Véxoa is a survey of Indigenous art of Brazil developed by curator and educator Naine Terena (member of the Terena Indigenous people of the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso do Sul). As its only North American venue, TUAG is proud to present the exhibition here with support by Teiger Foundation. The VIP tour at 5pm will be followed by the public conversation and reception at 6pm. This event will take place at the Aidekman Arts Center in Medford. More about the artists: Denilson Baniwa (from the Darí village, in the Baturité-Barreira community, municipality of Barcelos (AM), in the lower Negro River region) uses performance, graphics, installation and digital media to create resistance spaces and Indigenous movements. Véxoa features two new murals by Baniwa—indoors and outdoors. Daiara Tukano (traditional name Duhigô) belongs to the Uremiri Hãusiro Parameri clan of the Yepá Mahsã people, better known as the Tukano. Tukano is an artist, Indigenous rights activist and human rights researcher. Her artistic work is based on research about the traditional spirituality of her people. Véxoa features two paintings by Tukano. Learn more about the exhibition here. |
