Dear Colleagues, I hope you are resting and recharging. We are excited to open our fall exhibitions a bit earlier than usual – so if you are on one of the campuses, Tomashi Jackson: Across the Universe and Envisioning Democracy open at the Medford galleries on July 30th and Ulises: Assembly opens at the SMFA/Boston galleries on August 13th. This email contains myriad resources on the upcoming exhibitions, permanent collection, and some pedagogic strategies for incorporating them into your syllabi and assignments. Once your thoughts return to teaching, I hope you will dig in to find connections with your syllabi. These exhibitions showcase a range of media – from video and photography to sculpture and bookmaking. Through a range of material processes and archival research, artists in these exhibitions highlight the power of art to explore systemic patterns of inequity and build community through collective practice. I invite you to consider how engaging with current exhibitions and/or the Permanent Collection might enhance your learning objectives. Gallery exercises and public programming connect via a range of relevant topics and can be used as suggested or required assignments to offer additional perspectives to course content. We can work together to customize a session that prompts discussion and/or object-based inquiry to develop transferable skills in a non-classroom environment. Additionally, you can browse our Permanent Collection online or utilize one of our Collection Guides below to identify works that directly suit your curricula or research interest – with advance notice many pieces can be pulled for individual or small class groups, offering intimate viewing and study opportunities. Below you will find resources to help get you started. Please contact me for additional information and to brainstorm ideas. If you are uncertain about where to begin or how to connect with your courses, I can share models of past collaborations as inspiration. Mark your calendars for our opening events – celebrating Ulises on September 5th at the SMFA/Boston and Tomashi Jackson with DJ Troy Frost on September 18th in Medford! Best, |
